Questions

Frequently asked

Everything you need to know about our roasts, brewing, and getting your order to your door.

About our roasts

What makes your coffee single-origin?

Single-origin coffee comes from one specific region, farm, or cooperative — not a blend of beans from multiple countries. This lets you taste the unique terroir: the soil, altitude, climate, and farming practices that shape each coffee's flavor. Our single-origins are sourced directly from farmers we know and trust, roasted to highlight their distinct character.

How do you decide when to roast?

We roast daily in small batches to ensure peak freshness. Each roast is timed to the specific bean — a naturally processed Ethiopian takes a different approach than a washed Colombian. We taste every batch and roast to the exact moment the flavors are brightest, never to a timer. This is why our coffee tastes noticeably better within the first two weeks of roasting.

What's the difference between light, medium, and dark roasts?

Light roasts preserve the bean's origin flavors — you'll taste more acidity, floral notes, and the coffee's terroir. Medium roasts balance origin character with roast flavor, offering complexity and body. Dark roasts emphasize the roasting process itself, bringing out chocolate, caramel, and smoky notes. There's no "best" — it depends on your taste. We recommend starting with medium if you're unsure.

Do you offer decaf?

Yes. We use a water-process decaffeination method that preserves flavor better than chemical solvents. Our decaf is roasted with the same care as our regular coffee, and we rotate through different single-origins so you get variety. Decaf is available on request — email us to order.

Brewing & storage

What's the best way to brew coffee at home?

There's no single "best" — it depends on what you enjoy. Pour-over (V60, Chemex) highlights clarity and origin flavors. French press brings out body and oils. Espresso concentrates everything into intensity. Moka pot and AeroPress are excellent middle grounds. We're happy to recommend a method based on your taste preferences — just ask.

How should I store my coffee?

Keep beans in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. A cool, dark cupboard is ideal — not the fridge or freezer, which can introduce condensation. Whole beans stay fresh for 2–3 weeks after roasting; ground coffee loses flavor faster, so grind just before brewing. Our bags include a one-way valve that lets CO₂ escape while keeping oxygen out.

Should I buy whole beans or pre-ground?

Whole beans are always better if you have a grinder. Grinding releases aromatics and oils, so pre-ground coffee begins losing flavor immediately. If you don't have a grinder yet, we can grind your order for you — just let us know your brewing method and we'll dial in the right coarseness.

What brewing equipment do you recommend?

We stock a curated selection of grinders, pour-over cones, scales, and kettles — all tools we use and trust. A burr grinder is the single most important upgrade you can make. Beyond that, a gooseneck kettle and a simple scale transform your brewing consistency. Browse our equipment section or email us for personalized recommendations.

Delivery & orders

How long does shipping take?

We ship orders within 1–2 business days of roasting. Most US orders arrive within 3–5 business days via USPS Priority Mail. International orders take 2–3 weeks depending on customs. You'll receive a tracking number via email as soon as your package ships.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship to most countries. International orders include customs documentation and may be subject to import duties or taxes depending on your location. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout. Delivery times vary; we'll provide an estimate before you complete your order.

Can I set up a subscription?

Absolutely. Subscriptions let you choose a frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and we'll send your favorite roast on schedule. You can pause, skip, or change your selection anytime — no commitment. Subscribers get 10% off each shipment.

What if my order arrives damaged?

We pack carefully, but accidents happen. If your coffee arrives damaged or stale, email us with a photo and we'll send a replacement immediately at no charge. We stand behind every bag.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes. Digital gift cards are sent instantly and never expire. Physical gift cards are available for local pickup or can be mailed with a custom message. Contact us for details.

Our story

Why did you start Kettle & Crumb?

We opened because we couldn't find coffee and pastries that met our own standards. Most roasters prioritize volume over flavor; most bakeries use shortcuts. We wanted to prove that small-batch, intentional craft could be accessible. Every coffee is roasted the day it ships. Every pastry is baked fresh. That's our promise.

Where do you source your coffee?

We work directly with farmers and cooperatives in Ethiopia, Colombia, Kenya, and Central America. We visit our partners regularly, pay above fair-trade prices, and build long-term relationships. We're transparent about origins and pricing — you'll see exactly where your coffee comes from.

Are your pastries vegan or gluten-free?

Most of our pastries contain butter and eggs, but we offer a rotating selection of vegan and gluten-free options. Check our shop page for current availability, or email us if you have specific dietary needs — we may be able to accommodate special orders.

Do you have a physical location?

We operate as a roastery and bakery, with online ordering and shipping nationwide. We occasionally host tasting events and pop-ups in our region — follow our social channels for announcements. We'd love to meet you.
